Personal: A Glimpse of Our Summer on Film

We haven’t posted any personal photos on our journal for some time. It isn’t for any reason in particular, I think we just spent the last handful of years subconsciously separating our business and family lives. I’ve begun to realize that the two are actually more intertwined than I thought. Photography is our passion and love, it is how we document our family and cherished memories, and it is also our business, which we feel incredibly lucky to have. It is a huge part of us, both our personal and work lives.

Throughout the last 15 years we have gone through phases and our visions and styles have ebbed and flowed within our business. We have felt incredible inspiration, and at times we’ve felt burnt out and stagnant. I guess this is how most creatives feel at one time or another in their careers. We put down our film cameras for quite a while. It was not a conscious decision, we were focusing our energy on other parts of our business and family lives. Recently, I’ve felt a pull back to the analog and art of film; to the way it feels to look through a roll of film that’s just been delivered. I think certain areas of our life have slowed down enough to take a breath and remember this part of photography that we loved but didn’t have the time to nurture these last years.

Matt pulled out our little Yashica 35mm earlier this summer to play around with photographing our little family adventures. We felt no pressure to take incredible photos and just snapped some moments of our summer with our boys. It was simple and we really didn’t think much of it, but when we got the scans back we both found so much joy looking through them. Both of us felt a renewed excitement and inspiration with these cameras that we hadn’t used in so long.

I thought I’d share some of these photos here, because we used to share personal photos and I’m not sure when or why it stopped. I think it’s really wonderful for our past, current, and future couples to know a bit more about us and our lives - especially since our couples share their most special and personal days with us.

I’m hoping to incorporate more film into the weddings we capture as well. This is something we used to do and I am feeling excited and inspired to bring it back. If you’ve read this far (thank you, this is quite the rambling post!) and would like to see us bring some film cameras with us to your photo shoot or wedding, send us a message and let us know! As always, we want to hear from you.
